Land Use - Capitol Project

OVERVIEW

The Plum Ski-ters are working with the DNR to maintain a land use contract for the site they have skied on since the early 1970s. In 2022, upon renewal of the land use agreement, the DNR determined that the team must remediate hillside erosion at the ski site at State House Point. This requirement marked the start of the current project, making erosion remediation a top priority for the team. As part of the agreement, the DNR requires the Ski-ters to cover the full cost of repairing the spectator hillside.

Since the land is state-owned, working with the DNR is the only path forward. The project is expected to cost around $250,000, which will be a heavy financial strain on the team. To help meet this challenge, the Ski-ters are applying for grants and seeking support from sponsors, donors, and the community.

The team envisions a future where they can continue performing shows at the place they have proudly called home for more than 50 years. Once complete, this project will provide not only an improved ski show venue but also a welcoming community space that can be enjoyed by fans and visitors all summer long.

A major step in this effort is working with the DNR to rezone the site from Forestry to Parks and Recreation. Rezoning would unlock more grant opportunities and allow for permanent seating, stairs, handrails, and ADA-accessible features so the site can be safely enjoyed by everyone. The area already functions as a recreation space—we just need the legal designation to match its actual use.
